Web has evolved from a simple protocol to deliver information to commercial and complicated platform for distribute and share ideas. Internet has evolved in the last few decade, new technologies appears make web development easier and fun. Below we'll find out, ten biggest moment of Web development history.

1. Linus Torvalds Make Linux Kernel
When Linus Torvalds released the kernel in 1991, these kernel summon strong criticims from other UNIX system developers. Few people believe Linux is targeting the wrong architecture (in this case : 32-bit architecture), some people also believe Linux have fundamental fault. Nevertheless, the kernel developed by Linus eventually grow into the operating system choice of web server today.

2. Mosaic Browser Released
The Internet will be a far more boring “place” without Mosaic, a very first browser that popularize the Internet. When released in 1993, Mosaic is the first browser who support bookmark, icon, modern interface, and the ability to display images.

Since that time, every modern browser today support CSS, although there are still some who aren't comply with Web Standard.
Thanks to CSS, Websites are easier to maintain and made (provided that the browser is comply with Web standard).

Well, actually open source movement is already there since the previous time. Believe it or not, the Web is not initially created for commercial reasons, it's only created to facilitate information exchange. Since the Website became source of income, information exchange, which initially defines the Internet start to wane, until now.
Fortunately, open source movement begins. Internet itself is created with the help of open source that created in the 1960s. In 1998, several major Internet players met in the Freeware Summit event held by Tim O'Reilly, and agree to use the term “open source” and officially start the open source initiative. Open source license is created to allow developers to work together to distribute and modify the source code.

5. PHP Released by Rasmus Lerdorf
Thanks to open source, dynamic languange such as PHP is distributed free to the Website developers. You will not find hosting provider that did not offer PHP. PHP is a de facto standard language to web development and installed in more than 20 million sites and 1 million server.
When PHP introduced by Rasmus Lerdorf ini 1995, the language was quickly adopted as the best language for web programming. PHP can be operated in web server, embedded in HTML, and works perfectly with SQL databases. PHP allow developers to quickly make database-based sites.

6. PayPal Founded
Although often controversial, there is no doubt that PayPal is a pioneer of online money transfer process. Founded in 1998, at first PayPal is designed as a method to transfer money from buyer to seller in auction sites like eBay.

7. Firefox Born!!
In 2003, Internet Explorer is the ruler of the single segment in the browser, without any competition at all. After the collapse of Netscape, IE controlled 94% market share for the Internet.
Without competitor, IE's development is slowing down, and the IE's update period that usually takes only one year from version 1 to 6 become five years from IE6 to IE7 in 2006. The one who encourage the development of IE in mid-200 is an open source Mozilla browser : Firefox.
Firefox enter the browser industry in 2003. The first version of Firefox overcome many shortcomings of IE, including tabbed browsing, spell checking, live bookmarking, and more innovative features. However, the more important features for the web developers community, Firefox is made based on the Gecko rendering engines that comply with web standards.

8. Ruby on Rails Become Mainstream
Even though some people didn't consider this moment as the biggest moment of Web Developing History, the popularity of Ruby on Rails (RoR) is very important because it's become the symbol of web development model changes that use framework to develop sites efficiently.
David Heinemeier Hansson released RoR in 2004 and since that time have been many web development framework for PHP and Phyton are released.
9. 37 Signals Released “Getting Real” Ebook
37 Signals has become one of the most popular web development company in the last 5 years. Not only producing remarkable product, they become one of the leader of thinkers in the modern web development, especially when promotes the “agile” development method.
Basecamp is their first product made using the first version of RoR and web development philosophy which they use to be one of the causes of their popularity among web developers. And the release of the eBook entitled “Getting Real” in 2006 make the agile web development become more and more popular.

10. Amazon Launches Cloud-based Storage
With the S3 and EC2 service in 2006, cloud-based storage and service officially become mainstream. Usually, company must add more and more expensive server as their bussines growth, but with Amazon's technology developers only need to pay for the bandwidth they used.
Theoretically, developers can make services with unlimited scalability using S3 and EC2. Now, web-based service is far more cheaper than before.
